Very cool noodle house in the old China town section of SLO. The order process is counter-walk up style. Simply fill out a form, and they cook it to your liking. The food is fresh and it's my go to spot for that noodle craving. Enough tables in side for 20 people but it's seldom too crowded for lunch.

I have been coming to The Palm for years, and for some reason always thought this place was closed down. But no...it's a place...that's still in business. So I love noodles and was stoked when someone at work suggested we go. Good thing we eat lunch early as the inside seating is tight and small, with just two booths, the rest high top tables or a bar...We got a booth thank goodness. Two people ordered noodle soups, one with beef, one with pork, one with fat noodles the other with thick noodles. I ordered chow mein. We all agreed the noodles were all cooked well in both dishes but everything was underwhelming in terms of flavor. No seasoning on the meat, the veggies in my chow mein were plain, the soups all needed chili sauce for some flavor... Maybe this is traditional and how it should be but in my experience with noodles there is usually more flavor/seasoning. Service was nice, and the atmosphere is decent, just not enough flavor.

Came to SLO to take a 3 day course at the university. Looked around for a Chinese place and I think I might be super spoiled since I'm from SF, but the food here was incredibly disappointing. I don't understand what I was eating. Maybe I chose the wrong dish, but I would not come here again. It was a bit on the pricey side as well.

Nice service. Food was awful. As much as I don't like to bash on businesses, I just thought I'd let people know before they stumble into this place. My fiancée and I both agreed that our food tonight was one of the least appetizing meals of our lives... If you're hungry in SLO, then I recommend you keep looking for another place to eat.

This review is for their noodle stand during Farmers Market. I always want to try something new during Farmers but keep coming back here. What a great amount of food at a great price. Very flavorful, very filling and downright delicious. Thanks!

Went here a few weeks ago. Asked for the noodles with the dark sweet sauce. The dark sweet sauce was (a) very light in color and (b) overwhelmingly ginger flavored so I returned with my dish and asked them if they put the wrong sauce on (since they also have a ginger sauce). The chef came out in a sort of intimidating manner and said that no, it was the correct sauce but he could take it back and put more on. Thinking that might improve it a bit I let him. It came back swimming in the sauce. Would not return. Super disappointed.

Went here for a quick bite to eat but realized it wasn't all that great. Honestly this wouldn't pass as Chinese food at any asian/Chinese restaurant I've eaten at. Their food was bland, sauce would sit at the bottom of the bowl and they gave very little noodles. Their noodles tasted like fettuccine.. Not any type of Asian style egg noodles that I've eaten before. Majority of the bowl was vegetables and I got beef on mine which was slightly dry. The only saving grace was their dumplings which are pretty damn good. I really wanted to love this place due to all the great reviews and I really wanted a Chinese place close by so I could get a taste of home but unfortunately this was a disappointment.

Since SLO is limited in their Asian "fusion" flavors Mee Heng is a good place to turn to when you want a little noodle action. Both times I went I was not disappointed. There is flavor and the veggies are cooked to where there is still firmness to them. The only complaint is that the noodles are not "dry" but swimming in "sauce". Overall a good place to go if you need a noodle fix.

I would try it again. I got the Chicken Peanut Salad, which sounds plain and ordinary but was in reality very refreshing. It wasn't your typical plate of iceberg lettuce and chopped up fried chicken strips. Mee Heng Low was taken over by new management (I believe) a few months a go and changed some of the ingredients and presentation of their dishes; that's neither good or bad, just a statement. This place has so much potential but just doesn't seem to have a notable dish to keep coming back for. The restaurant itself has a lot of character and is a great spot for a pre- or post movie bite.

  • Ian M.

In my opinion, Mee Heng Low is the perfect lunch spot when I need that taste of old Chinatown. They make a classic Chow Mein, pan fried into a pancake of perfection. I love trying out the different sauces when I come. Although the meat is a bit on the saltier side (I love me some salty pork), it doesn't overpower the rest of the dish. Also, try their booth at the Thursday Farmers' Market. It's a little different than what they serve at the restaurant, but it's still awesome.

  • Sam J.

I absolutely love this place. The owner is extremely nice and the food is made fresh! It is hidden away and not many people I know go here which makes it that much better (less crowds)! Also on Thursdays they have live Jazz upstairs, great for a date or just to enjoy the music and have dinner.

Must have been a bad day. We went for lunch, because we like noodle places, we liked the history, we liked the reviews. We were not greeted, figured out on our own that you fill out order forms, but didn't realize you order at the counter, for which we were somewhat condescendingly corrected. We ordered our food, waited for a long long time, and then when it arrived, oh my, both orders had little flavor, and the noodles were gummy, plain, and "crispy" is not much different than soggy. My daughter's noodles had an odd after-taste. Finally to top it off, about an hour later, our stomachs hurt, which makes me wonder about the cleanliness of this place. We are never going back!

Such good noodles. Had the twice cooked pork last night and it was super yummy. So me and my friends were able to find a seat right away but several people came in and left because there was nothing available. It is a very small place but I do know they have seating up stairs but did not open it because they were short on staff. I might suggest having it available just for extra seating. If everyone pays in advance at the counter anyway why can't they go upstairs to sit? Just set up a place for everyone to put their dirty dishes when they are done eating. This way only one wait staff has to go up and get it.

  • Jay M.

Awesomeness! Had the glass noodles with tofu and veggies. Great for ppl like myself who have colitis. Had this during a bad flare up and it was easy to digest.

  • Liza V.

Very bad service. The gentlemen that served us was very rude. Was not at all helpful when we asked for suggestions. Noodles had no flavor. Beef had no flavor at all. Will not return to this place.

  • Alexis I.

First time here and it was a wonderful experience. Enjoyed the potstickers! Really delicious, a MUST when you go here. Designed more as a take-out restaurant, but pleasant to sit and enjoy our meal. The spicy peanut sauce was a little bland, will not be ordering that next time, but looking forward to coming back to try the other sauces. The customer service and friendliness was amazing!

    (4)
  • C F.

Most flavorful item in the bowl was the cilantro sprig. :-( Both chicken and pork were very fatty, not trimmed. Bummer that. Peanut chili sauce had zero peanuttyness. Wondering how they stay in business. Dining partner said, "We will not be back."

  • Pat M.

We went there the first time two years ago, and though the ingredients seemed good, everything was swimming in soy sauce. Went back in May this year and though the servers were sweet and helpful I think they were cooking, too. They brought out piles of sprouts with meat on top, nearly inedible, which gave us both indigestion. This place is in the remnants of the authentic SLO Chinatown, near a theatre which could attract a steady crowd. Why can't it attract good cooks? I gave it two stars solely for the kids who were working there that day, doing their best--for all I know maybe the cook didn't show up and they were left to fend for themselves. I'd try again, at another time of day, perhaps, to see if it's sometimes better and we caught it at its worst, but I'm afraid to, and can't get anyone to go with me.

  • Shannon W.

Yum love this place. Have gone a few times (once on jazz night) and everyone I was with loved the food! So far I've only had the Chicken Chop Suey and bites of my friends dishes, it's all pretty delicious. The service was friendly and attentive!

    (4)
  • Heather T.

Wow. Knew they had live jazz but never had a chance to go on jazz night. Happened to be downtown and decided to go in. Score it was jazz night. Love the place anyway, food is always good. Service is fast & friendly. Add live music and I'm over the top with happiness!!

    (5)
  • Yudi T.

The noodles were plain and tasteless. We were the only ones in there and we still got bad service....

  • Laura Lu M.

Yum! Yum! Yum! this is now one of my favorite places to eat in SLO. I love the peanut chili sauce on the chow mien noodles with chicken--the veggies are killer in this. and the twice cooked pork noodle dish is delish! I kinda felt like I was in San Fran. The Jasmine green tea is wonderful too. It is a great place to come before going to the show next door at the Palms Theater. Also, for those who have not ventured in--you order at the counter. It is pretty simple; they have an order sheet in which you check off the things you want in your dish . I will be going back for sure. They also have Jazz on Wednesday nights, so I hear

The basic dishes are $8.00 per dish. We brought seven people to celebrate my husband's birthday. Seeing the reasonable price made one friend do the raised eyebrow thing. Were we slummin? I had the low mein with SaiFun Glass Noodles. Great for my gluten free needs. I had the peanut chili sauce and added chicken, $1.00. We were all umming and ahhing and we were all trying each other's dishes. This was seriously fun and delicious. I especially appreciated the nice vegetables. The sauce choices were great. I tried their red pork from my husbands bowl. I'm not a pork person, but dang that was tasty and all agreed that it was obviously a specialty of the house and worth coming back for. Then we went upstairs into the lounge with our wine. The owner's girlfriend was there with her visiting niece who was full of boundless energy and became part of our birthday celebration. Then on the way out we told the owner what a great time we had and dug their food. We had some laughs. Great guy. Great place. It ain't fancy, but I'd so go there again.

Wow what a treat. I was craving chow mein but could not find many Chinese food restaurants. I gave up on the web search and just went down town. I come down to SLO 1-2 x a month on business, so I am usually looking for some take out I can eat in my room. I saw Noodle shop and was hooked. This place was great. The owner (I am assuming) stopped to tell me about all the different noodle option and dishes. The restaurant was small and quaint and felt like a casual in and out place. I ordered the Chow Mein with peanut sauce and shrimp. Noodles were crisp and crunchy on one side and soft on the other. The sauce had a mild bite with good flavor. Stood up to the travel to the hotel in the car I will be trying many of the other dishes in my next visit

  • Vaughn T.

Simple, yet genius at the same time. I really love getting the chow Mein here it's really delicious. You can also get potstickers here so those are tummy also, it's also very traditional so i like that. Overall, come here.

  • Sf Momm Y.

super retro exterior, simple menu w fresh ingredients, reasonable prices ( bay area this same place would be charging $15/bowl.....) and a free plain bowl of plain noodles for the kids. broth was clear and piping hot, not oily but full of actual flavors. i love the retro feel of this place, yet very cool - simple menu, which is awesome, since it is a small shop. Attentive service, friendly, and a great spot for kids... Cuz what kid doesn't like noodles?(unless they are allergic?!) A bargain lunch at a cool little spot. Walking distance from the children's museum!

  • Marshall N.

Always great service! I generally opt for the twice-cooked pork or a soup bowl when I go there, and I leave with a smile on my face. The prices are right and the service is good. Very simple and straight forward dining, in a cool little locale in-between the Palm Theater and Abraxas Energy Consulting. Enjoy!

Who knew? We stumbled upon this place today after seeing a movie at the Palm. SLO is one of our favorite towns in CA, and we feel we know it pretty well. Finding MHL today taught us we have more to discover . . . and that is a good thing! PROS: Cool neon signs out front; friendly service (the owner?); simple yet nice wine/beer selection. Not a lot of experience doing the noodle-gig, but we really enjoyed their offerings! While the menu is very limited, we found the dishes offered excellent flavors, fresh vegetables and meats, and all were served to order. Reasonably priced, and portions were more than ample, and we ended up bringing home a couple of our dishes CONS: Beer could have been colder, and a nice offering of Japanese/Chinese beers would be nice (e.g., Asahi, Tsing-Dao) We dug this place. Just a block off the beaten path, MHL offers some tasty chow . . . Cheers! RS

Friendly service. Relaxed atmosphere. Husband and I both got the soup bowls, his with salmon, mine with tofu. We were told "both come with veggies", so I didn't get the vegetable option. I should have. The only veggies were minimal carrots and celery. I got the "big" noodles, which were essentially spaghetti, not udon. Husband got "flat" noodles, he says were good. We both were surprised at the size of the salmon- big. But, the amount of noodles and veggies were lacking. We were still hungry after we finished our soup bowls. We saw the waiter bringing out heaping bowls of noodles to other tables, without soup, so we are guessing that the chow mein and other dishes are more substantial. We want to like this restaurant, so we are going to go back and order differently.

Been here twice. First time was so good I could not wait to get back; 5 star. 2nd time was incredibly underwhelming. 2 constants: friendly staff and massive portions. Try it and see for yourself- hopefully it's the 5 star experience

Exellent, simple and fresh. Owner seems like a nice guy too. I would definitely recommend this if you are in San Luis Obispo.

    (5)
  • Alicia G.

I have to admit that I don't order anything but the soup bowl with the flat noodle and I love to make it spicy with LOTS of chili sauce. I love it and crave it often!! I have had friends get other bowls and the specials and have tried them and really enjoyed them, however, I would not go here if I was expecting true Asian cuisine or Chinese. I get it to go a lot but I really like the atmosphere in the place. The owner is really nice and did a great job remodeling the upstairs and they sometimes have live music. Oh and one more thing they have homemade almond cookies that are a must!!

    (4)
  • Pricila H.

service is great. the food? bland. prices aren't too bad. the tea is really good though, it brews right in front of you.

  • Erik D.

I work in downtown SLO and Mee Heng Low is on our weekly lunch circuit (along with Firestone and Petra). The atmosphere at this small place is nice and cozy; Paul (owner) is great; and the noodles are awesome. I usually get the twice cooked pork over flat noodles. However, my favorite is the occasional special of ground lamb. If it's available, definitely try it.

    (5)
  • T K.

Ok food. Got lo mien, flat noodles, but they were actually fettucini noodles. Flavor is ordinary. Definitely healthy version of Chinese food. I prefer real Chinese food with good flavors. I might try the chow mein next time. Until then it's ok.

    (3)
  • Larry C.

My wife & I love the chow mein here!

  • mike T.

I don't know how this place became completely neglected by me. I eat here on a some what regular basis. I for some reason keep thinking I already reviewed it. I digress, This is my favorite chinese place in slo county. Simple menu, fresh ingredients friendly staff. My only complaint is that they do not have the curry special nearly enough.

    (5)
  • David G.

Nice environment, good service though it's counter service. The ingredients seemed fresh, but the dishes we ordered were just really ordinary. One was the chop suey and the other was the soba noodles. They both were really lacking in flavor. We had to add condiments to jazz them up but still it didn't do the trick. I want to like this place more but they've got to make the food better.

    (3)
  • Pomp C.

This place bills itself as chop-suey, but the menu is made fresh daily. That's just a disclaimer. That being said, I enjoy Mee Heng Low for what it offers. I don't expect fine dining when I order. The Char Sui Bao is unprecedented in SLO, even though it may not be the best example one can try. The noodle dishes are fairly simple but they are made to order and spiciness is adjusted by request. That's something this gringo has trouble actually getting. (Cuz I want it hottt!) If you seek relatively cheap take-out, this is a fine venue. Don't come here if you expect life-changing cuisine, as it's clearly not the model. More likely is a tasty example of "street food" that's not available otherwise in SLO. Also, the staff is very friendly and the venue offers live music now. I hope they can keep making a go of it!

    (3)
  • Charley C.

simple and good! this place has terrific noodles and soup and is a great stop before or after a movie at the Palm (next door) even tough it is only noodles and vegetables and various toppings the combinations are endless and the staff could give lessons to many other restaurants! You will enjoy this place!

    (5)
  • Matt and Rita C.

We really want to like this place. We love its convenient location right next to the Palm Theater, we love the original Mee Heng Low neon sign, we love that it is one of the last vestiges of Chinatown in SLO. We like the cozy size and personal atmosphere. I like the tea that comes in wonderful Chinese ceramic cups with a built-in brewer (and tastes great!). The noodles look homemade and we want to like them, but they really are just too bland to our taste, and could not been redeemed even with copious amounts of chili sauce and soy sauce. (Note that we only have had noodle dishes with vegetables or tofu, so perhaps the dishes with meat are better -- but not according to the other reviewers.) We look forward to returning to this restaurant, but only after we read on Yelp that the menu has improved. Note that the restaurant re-opened under new management with a new menu in 2009, so disregard any reviews earlier than 2009 (which refer to the previous incarnation of Mee Heng Low).

    (2)
  • Ralph B.

The noodles were great. The ambiance was nice. The service was horrible. It could've just been a bad day for them. The noodles were definitely good enough to give it another try

    (3)
  • Lisa R.

My husband and I finally ate here a month or so ago. I've had the real deal - soups, noodles and chow mein - in Guangzhou, China. And I've had much more authentic noodles in San Fran's Chinatown. So we were very disappointed with the flavor. The portions are large, especially the chow mein dishes. But the flavor of the soup broth falls short. Nothing like the delicious Cantonese noodles I loved to slurp up at tiny restaurants in China or the stretched noodles I'm enjoying in my profile pic! If you want a healthier fast food option, the soup bowls are a good way to go. Just know that they'll be a bit bland. Grab an order slip (just one/person, no group orders on one slip!), check what you want and turn it in. $7 for the veggie options, $8 for chicken and tofu. $9 for "red pork" and $10 for beef and shrimp.

    (2)
  • Maya D.

I love the food and the people are great so it's my go to spot when I want some fried noodles!

    (5)
  • John R.

Consistently excellent food after a slow start. I came here shortly after it was re-opened under new ownership (about a year or two back?) and I was not impressed. The noodles had no flavor, spices, etc. Bleh. It's completely changed. The dishes now are really varied, so delicious, and the flavors are brought up enough now without going too far. My personal favorites are the chop suey and the salmon glass noodle special, but I've sampled lots of the menu and it's all great. They get the details right, too: tea is served in ceramic contraptions (not sure of the name) that steep the tea beautifully, they have a great beer selection... I mean, how many BARS can say they have Firestone Walker Velvet Merlin? Just a great place, and proof that some places deserve a second chance.

Lunched here a few weeks ago. Was impressed enough that I'd go back. Probably one of the few more authentic-style asian restaurants in the area (as in not drenched in sauces or grease a la Panda Express). I think it's gotten a bad rap so far about the level of spiciness and flavor. I found it to be quite fresh and flavorful, but it's not going to beat you over the head with spice and flavor. it's a little more subtle. If you're used to other types of asian food expecting that, you might come away a little disappointed. It's not overwhelming, but certainly not flavorless. I had the twice cooked pork and it was really good - lots of cabbage, basil, bean sprouts, carrots, etc to balance out the fattiness of the pork. Good quantity of it too. Service was good, jasmine pearl green tea (served traditionally in one of those little pots with the strainer deal) tasted at least as good as it smelled. Also a good value for the quantity & quality of food. Not at all crowded for lunch, and quick. The owner/chef also told us they have jazz music & some dim-sum style food on wednesday nights upstairs. I love dim sum so will definitely have to go back sometime for that. I would recommend it and plan to go back.

I have to agree with everyone else. I had such high hopes for this place. Went in on a weekday and was greeted by the friendly owner. Ordered the Lo Mein noodles with shrimp and handed the owners wife a twenty dollar bill. Waited five minutes while she struggled to work the cash register to get my change. She finally summoned her husband from the back to help her. She seemed "preoccupied." When the food arrived, it looked great. However, from the first bite I discovered how flavorless it was. Luckily, there was hot sauce and soy sauce on the table. That seemed to help give it a little "oomph." I'm rooting for them to get better and expand their menu. For the time being, I'm going to pass.

  • Hayley T.

I love this place. The name, well, it is just funny. The food is fresh, and the choices are good. I love the standard chow mein with ginger-soy and red pork, but the noodle bowls are delicious too. The specials are also terrific - the chicken salad on a hot day is delish, and the twice cooked pork over noodles is yummy. This is a 2-3 times per month lunch stop for me!

    (5)
  • Matt C.

Pleasant, but the search for good Chinese in SLO continues. Several reviews recommended the daily specials but at this early hour (5:30) the specials already were sold out My dining partner and I tried two dishes both with tofu: soup bowl with sai fun noodles and lo mein with peanut chili sauce. Nice broth for the soup but I was disappointed that the only veggies were shred celery and shred carrots. My friend's lo mein was pleasant with a good peanut taste but unexpected sweet & not spicy. On the PLUS side, the portions are quite generous

    (3)
  • Sabina M.

Wonderful little place with fantastic food (and a lot of it), a talented and friendly owner/cook, and a jazz bar upstairs! Who could ask for more? Mee Heng Low is a great place for when you're craving Asian food, but aren't feelin' Panda or the average sushi bar. AND it's right next to the Palm. Dinner and a movie, anyone?

    (5)
  • Alison S.

After hearing great things about their noodle bowls I was really excited to try it. I had the vegetarian one and unfortunately was not impressed. I thought the noodles were very oily and the veggies old, over-cooked and just not much flavor all around. I'm willing to try something else on the menu and maybe I'll have better luck since it is very convenient that they have a booth at Farmers' every week.

    (2)
  • Zarth S.

Now that this has been taken over by new owners, I sincerely hope that they pick up their game in the next couple months. My girlfriend and I came here hoping that the "noodle" shop was going to at least carry on some of the legacy of the old place. Sadly, we were disappointed. My chicken lo mein with spicy thai peanut sauce was almost tasteless - but not completely. I say "not completely" because after I tasted my girlfriends chop suey with mee heng low sauce, I realized a dish could actually have no flavor. My love for the old food at this place has insured that I will come back here again, months from now, and hope that they have gotten better. It would be a shame to lose once of the few, decent Chinese places in the central coast.

  • Candice C.

This place is amazing! The food is delicious and flavorful! The environment is great for a date or just hanging out with friends. The menu isn't very big, but it really doesn't have to be because every item on the menu is fantastic!

  • Kim G.

Jeez, after reading the other reviews I'm tempted to give 5 stars! This place was really good. We each got a char siu bao pork bun and split the chow mein with chicken and black bean garlic sauce. The buns were especially yummy; they were better than the SF Chinatown ones I liked as a kid (sacrilege, I know). The veggies were fresh and this little hole in the wall was surprisingly tasty. My jasmine tea was lovely and you get unlimited refills:). That's a super size that I can dig. My husband said he hadn't had a chow mein that good since his service in the foreign legion stationed in the Orient.

THis place is over priced and simple. Man I wish the old mee heng low was back. KIM RULES THE NIGHT!!!!!!!!

  • Elle J.

This place is pretty tasty. I had my noodles in a sweet plum sauce, it wasn't too sweet. The chili-peanut was "freakin' awesome" - in the words of my bf. The building itself is pretty tiny, my family and I were lucky to get a spot. I guess it is more of a takeout place anyway. I am expecting to go again soon... going to try the Ginger sauce next. Overall, very tasty, nice portions, just a little bit crammed.

One of our favorite places to eat at when we're in SLO. Great noodle dishes fast and consistently good. My husband loves the lamb special, and I like the crispy pan fried noodles with red pork. We usually go for lunch, but if we happen to go at dinner time and there is live jazz upstairs, it's a bonus!

    Love the twice cooked pork

  • Steph M.

This place is great when you have a hankering for noodles. I've tried the soy ginger, and the spicy peanut sauce and both are fantastic. The food is quick to your table, and the restaurant has a cute ambiance. It gets crowded on jazz night, but usually you can get a table if you wait a bit.

  • stacy a.

disappointing!! ate here for dinner last night. ordered, then sat upstairs since the downstairs was crowded. EVERY table upstairs was dirty, even though there was no one up there. our food came out, we had no water, no napkins, and never got the drinks we had ordered. the food was actually pretty good, but the service was so bad that it ruined the entire experience. the guys that work there really need to get their act together!! oh, and the guy at the order counter told me that they use only chicken breast ... well it definitely is NOT!!!

    (2)
  • Cathy F.

Didn't love it. Service was inattentive and food was just okay. Maybe if I knew the right blend of "herbs and spices" to add it would have been better.

  • Mrs. B.

Great place to eat on a Wednesday night--they have a live jazz band. The food is reasonably priced and it's a fun atmosphere. I don't know about going on any other night but for the Jazz/food combo I would gladly go again. Go with the house wine (white or red), it's surprisingly good and is reasonably priced. I recommend the bao if you like it baked and the vegetable chow mein, it's only $8!

    (5)
  • Alex P.

good for lunch if you're in downtown slo. meals are generally 10-15 dollars, so it's kinda pricey for a student like me. apart from that you can say that this is the epitome of americanized chinese food. the whole idea of chop suey is significant in of itself. a symbol of both american and chinese cultures, chop suey; and this restaurant that bears it's name is amazing. only thing that bugged me was how you ordered your food: using a piece of paper that you fill out, like you're ordering a factory made noodleset. of course when it comes to good food you can't be picky.

  • Diane J.

Loved the place. And so nice to see it opened again. We took a group of 30 women and ate upstairs. It was served hot, tasted yummy, and the service was good. And best of all we all had a good time. I am giving it 5 stars because I believe some of the ratings were a little harsh for a place just opening. This is not a 5 star restaurant but a modest charming noodle house which uses fresh ingredients. Only negative: They had just opened the upstairs and it still had the old dingy linoleum tiles and the upstairs needed some improvement of their acoustics. Other than that it was a great time. I recommend checking it out and making up your own mind.

As good as their name-- which speaks the truth for yours truly. Now be extra careful with that cutting knife, homeboy.

San Luis Obispo is in great need of a noodle house but Mee Heng Low in its current incarnation isn't it. The food is REALLY bland, no matter what you are having. Plus they have a VIP section upstairs that was great in theory, but the space is totally unfinished with spackle on the walls, miss-matched furniture, and construction lights for lighting. I really hope the owners read some of these reviews because there is great potential.

We stopped on our way through town, and it really hit the spot. We had the twice cooked pork and noodle soup. Great hot food, made quick, but tasted very fresh. Was not overly greasy like a lot of noodle/Chinese food places. Good portions as well and reasonably priced. Friendly service. Have already recommended it.

This restaurant just reopened after remodeling. I didn't know you could make any food absolutely tasteless, but Mee Heng did it well. The lo mein soup I got was basically water; no salt, no pepper, rubbery flavorless chicken. My husband's chow mein was no better. I spoke with a friend the next week and she had the same complaint. The only reason I gave it two stars is that it tasted alright when I added a ton of soy sauce and chili paste.

Not THE best chinese restaurant that I've ever tried but they get four stars for being close (not to mention in SLO!). I'm definitely a fan of their shrimp 'n lobster sauce and house special fried rice. Oh, and you HAVE to order a side of egg rolls. They are gynormous!

I like this little inexpensive restaurant. It's healthy Chinese - noodle shop really. No MSG. Not over salted. The other reviews here that complain about the 'bland' food is because the food is clean and not masked with heavy flavoring. The menu is simple and makes deciding easy. The prices are cheap with a large portion costing only $7 or $8. I had the noodle soup with veggies and tofu and it was piping hot with fresh ingredients. The service was fairly quick and the owner was very nice. It's conveniently located next to the Palm theater that shows only foreign and Indy films making it an easy place for our film club to gather.

Had soup noodles with chicken, which I found to be very bland. Well, if I thought of it as just chicken noodle soup, it was nice. But if I tried to think of it as Asian? No way. I found the counter staff to be a bit cool, not very welcoming, but the servers who actually brought the food were very nice and helpful. Strangely, they don't have any Asian beers on the menu. Overall, for $9 for a bowl of just so-so chicken soup, I won't be going back.

I had the twice cooked pork with noodles and it was wonderful. Nice location near the best movie theatre in the world! Fun interior. Jazz upstairs. The only decent Chinese food SLO county!

our group of 20 in SLO for a China Adoption reunion called late in the afternoon for a dinner reservation. The staff was outstanding in setting up a private room and giving attentive service. Kids and adults alike loved the menu of a variety of noodle dishes. Specials were outstanding, the beer and wine selection was focused on local offerings which were great. All of our party enjoyed the dishes offered and the affordable prices for families. We will definitely return next time in SLO!!!!

yeah, i'm not down on the harsh reviews for Mee Heng Low. I'm giving Paul and his staff 5 stars for taking over San Luis Obispo County's oldest restaurant and giving it some new life. I love the culture surrounding the building and it's long history in San Luis Obispo. I've never been a huge Chinese food guy, but Paul's dishes are so good, IMO. I found myself going back there for the twice cooked pork three times in a week. The staff is extremely courteous and I love that the upstairs is still under construction. I enjoy the fact that you are getting some insanely good food in a place that isn't all pimped out to attract upscale clients and tourists. Paul is keeping it local and keeping it fresh. Pay this place a visit on Wednesday nights and you might be surprised.

The place is on the edge of all the downtown shops and there was no wait for a table. They had very decent Chinese food. It's for sure a throw back to the usual Chinese eateries I'm used to. We had the House Special noodles and Kung Pao chicken. Both were tasty and the bill was under $20. This isn't a place to rave about, but I have no complaints either.

Simple, straight-forward. Specifically reviewed for their noodle bowl (w/chow mein noodles).Only dish I ever get. I also regularly order their chicken pot stickers. Get it. I order it to go, because I'm usually ordering to eat it in my office back at work. I tried the new 'Jin', off monterey and johnson. They were greasy, no veggies on their ramen. and more importantly they don't make it to go. The to-go noodle bowl at Mee Hung is brilliant. Not salty at all, just chicken, broth, noodles and fresh julienned veggies. An unspoiled canvas. Father and son place. Paul is rad, and his son is attentive. They play public radio and jazz, not that stupid jazz thats on the XM kenny G channel.. Hey, Paul, bring back the hot pepper sauce that is vinegar-based, in the clear packets for the pot stickers. It's a perfect match for the stickers! I've already got my stash of Garlic Rooster sauce for the soup. (get that in cups to go as well guys!) Love you guys, glad that you switched the to-go noodle bowl to a 32 oz cup with lid, rather than the handled asian to-go option. Not much option for "ramen" in SLO.. I think the soup bowl they have is as close as it gets.YUMMY

I ate here several years ago and I was not impressed. This was not the case on my visit to the re-opened restaurant. The new owners have put a wonderful spin on this place creating the "noodle bar" but still keeping the retro effects of the vintage sign. The staff was nice and the Lo Mein excellent. A little pricey for lunch but where isn't these days? I can't wait until the upstairs is open!

I had my first "Chinese" dinner here back in 1977. Much to my suprise it's still here. I found the food good and the service better with the whole family helping out. Just watch out for the msg, if you eat late you'll be up late.

This is an update. My last review lamented the fact that I had high hopes, but felt Mee Heng Low just wasn't quite there yet. I am happy to say that they seem to have worked through the growing pains. They now deliver a consistent product and the service has improved greatly. The upstairs really opens up the seating. It's also very nice to be able to grab a noodle dish to go and enjoy it down by the creek, at a concert in the Mission Plaza, or on a picnic.

While the food here was only average I like this place for two reasons. First off it is an awesome name for a Chinese restaurant. Second, the lady who waited on us was pretty hilarious and enthusiastic. I don't think I'll become a regular but I would recommend at least checking this place out.

I love the noodles and char siu bao pork buns. My favorite is the chow mein with red pork and plum sauce.

What a great addition to the casual downtown restaurant scene in SLO. The noodle menu is prepared fresh with great ingredients and the prices are very reasonable. It is very healthy and tasty fast food. Since they don't have a liquor license yet you can BYOB and save even more. The specials have been outstanding and I look forward to the menu expanding. Well done!

I love this place! It's definitely a family business and that has a certain amount of charm. They are pretty new and I know they have some good plans on the horizon. The food was excellent in terms of a satisfying quick meal. This is much more a family food type of restaurant and I appreciate the honesty that they portray by not trying to be all sheeshee on you. The owner believes in what he is doing and I think this place will only get better with time. If you want a simple satisfying meal then this is the place for you, I love my noodles and this places satisfies my fix. I am reserving the last star for the future as I know they will eventually hit their stride! They are the ex owners of the Rhythm Cafe, which was excellent, and he is a well known chef so I am expecting big things over time...

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
